Ingredients

  • phyllo pastry - 1 packet, fine sheets
  • butter - 1/2 cup (125 g), melted
  • filling
  • walnuts - 1 1/5 cups (300 g) ground
  • eggs - 1
  • sugar - 2 tbsp
  • syrup
  • sugar - 4 cups
  • water - 4 cups
  • vanilla - 1
  • lemons - juice of 1/2

How to make

Make the filling by combining the ground walnuts with the beaten egg and sugar.

Fold each phyllo pastry sheet into 3 lengthwise, smear with the melted butter. Put 1 tbsp of the filling at the end, fold the sheet into a triangle.

Place the triangles in a buttered oven dish. Smear them with butter on top and bake at 360°F (180 °C) to a nice crisp.

Make the syrup by mixing the sugar and water in a pot. Put it on the stove and once it reaches boiling point, leave it for another 10 min., remove from the stove and add the vanilla and lemon juice.

Pour the hot syrup over the cold baklava, cover with a towel and let it sit for at least 12 hours.
