The avocado is an appetizing fruit coming from central America. Nowadays, it is one of the most prized foods of raw foodists. The avocado is rich in easily digestible and delicious fats.
The cellulose and fats in it are actually in the largest quantities when compared with all other fruits. In addition, the avocado contains a complex of carotenoids, the predecessors to vitamin A, minerals, vitamins and fiber.
Despite the high levels of fats in the fruit, scientists have found that one avocado a day can lower bad cholesterol levels. Even individuals that are overweight can follow this practice. The only condition is to substitute the unhealthy fat in their food with that of the avocado.
Scientists from the University of Pennsylvania came to these findings after lengthy observations. They clarify that this does not mean simply adding one avocado a day to their food.
To achieve optimal results, everyone needs to get rid of the unhealthy fats in their diet and replace them with healthy ones from avocados.
In the tests, 45 volunteers between the ages of 21 and 70 took part. Each age group was subjected to several different diets for lowering bad cholesterol levels. The best one turned out to be the one with moderate levels of fat and 1 avocado daily.
The results were indisputable - 5 weeks after beginning the diet, the levels of low density lipoprotein, known as bad cholesterol, decreased most significantly.
Some time ago, another plus of including avocados in our daily menu was found. The fruit contains tangible amounts of vitamin E. They, in combination with the carotenoids, turn it into a potent antioxidant. As such, it hinders the development of prostate cancer.
Another upside to the avocado is that it has a low glycemic index. This makes it the perfect food for people who exercise and those who aim to lower or maintain their body weight. As well, it is recommended for people with high levels of insulin in the blood.
