Bulgur salad

Although it has been known for centuries as a nutritious food, nowadays bulgur is gaining more and more popularity among people who are interested in healthy eating. This is due to the fact that it is rich in proteins, minerals, phosphorus, iron, magnesium, zinc, etc.

Bulgur quickly and for quite a long time gives us the feeling of satiety, while at the same time it is not at all caloric. It is an ideal food for preparing your favorite dishes, even when you are on a diet.

Regarding the last statement, we open brackets to emphasize that while following a diet it is not good to consume more than 40-50 g of the product.

In this specific article, however, we will try to show you which ones are the most suitable spices for bulgur, since many culinary experts who are still inexperienced in the kitchen are not familiar with this topic.

First of all, we will share that when you prepare dishes or side dishes made from bulgur, it goes perfectly with any root vegetables such as carrots, parsley, celery, parsnips, etc.) and necessarily onions (onions, shallots, spring onions) and garlic.

Bulgur goes perfectly with traditional spices such as salt and black pepper, the latter of which must be freshly ground. In Arab cuisine, they would literally frown at you if you decided to use already ground and packaged black pepper.

Spices

To season bulgur dishes, Arabs usually use a ready-made spice mix known as zaatar. We cannot list all the ingredients of this mix, because it varies both from the region where you buy it and from the taste habits of the local population. However, it is considered almost mandatory to have thyme, oregano, cumin, roasted sesame seeds, coriander, salt and sumac. Sometimes the aroma of cinnamon is also felt in the composition of zaatar.

In Asian cuisine, where bulgur is also of great importance, they have their own mix known as Five Spice. Its ingredients can again vary, but the main ones are Sichuan pepper, cinnamon, star anise, cloves and fennel. The five spices are used to flavor bulgur even in some Arab countries.

Powdered ginger, turmeric, fresh parsley and oregano are classic spices for bulgur, which, by the way, also "goes" very well with lemon juice. A typical example is the classic tabbouleh salad.

Italians and Spaniards flavor bulgur with fresh basil and oregano, dried tomatoes and capers, and in the Balkans bulgur can also be seasoned with the spice that is so popular in the region - savory.

Bulgur patties

Ultimately, it's all a matter of taste and you can improvise, but remember that not all spices go well with each other. Proceed with caution until you find your mix or bouquet of spices that seem most suitable for bulgur.

When you find your aromatic herbs, feel free to prepare bulgur patties, bulgur soup and all kinds of bulgur salads.
