Persian blue salt was formed anciently from salt lakes that evaporated and dried up 110 million years ago during the Cretaceous period and were compacted by the Earth over time. When the movement of tectonic plates created the mountain ranges of Iran, strips of blue salt in the rocks were exposed.
Due to the fact that this salt is mined from buried ancient lakes, it is extremely pure as it has not been exposed to any modern environmental pollutants.
