Mascarpone is a type of soft cheese, which originates from Italy. It is the basis of many dishes, but is also often used to make a number of pastries. The most famous cake made with Mascarpone is Tiramisu.
Due to the relatively high value of this cheese or due to the fact that not all grocery stores offer it, many cooks are looking for quality mascarpone substitutes.
The question, however, is whether there is a cheaper equivalent, that also has the same taste qualities as those of the soft Mascarpone cheese?
The answer is "Yes!" - and it is SOUR CREAM.
Sour cream is also a dairy product that is high in fat. It is made from high-fat milk and is used in cooking and confectionery.
It is an ideal substitute for mascarpone. It is a much more affordable product than Italian cheese and the taste and texture is almost the same. It is very difficult, even impossible to distinguish the differences between the two dairy products when tasting them.
Also, at home it is much easier to make your own sour cream than mascarpone. All you need is fresh milk and very little yogurt, which will ferment the cream.
The only drawback to using sour cream as a substitute for mascarpone is that the cream has an average of a 3 days shorter shelf life than the soft cheese.
