Why Don’t Muslims Eat Pork?

The Holy Book of Muslims, the Quran, states: It is not for a believing man or woman—when Allah and His Messenger decree a matter—to have any other choice in that matter. Indeed, whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger has clearly gone ˹far˺ astray.” (33:36).

The prohibition against eating pork also comes from the Quran. The first thing to notice is how the Holy Book explains why Muslims do not eat pork. In the Quran this subject is mentioned four times and in different verses uses approximately the same text, which introduces a ban on the use of carrion, spilled blood and pork, which is called "dirty" there. The Quran also forbids eating meat from animals that were not slaughtered for the sake of Allah.

From this follows another reason why Islam forbids Muslims from eating pork: the pig is an unclean animal and has been considered so since time immemorial, long before the advent of Islam.

This animal can eat its excrement, eat garbage and there are also cases when these animals kill their offspring. Even in the earliest religious rituals, the pig was considered an unsuitable animal for ritual sacrifice.

Another reason why Muslims must not eat pork is its similarity to human flesh. They are similar both in their structure and in a number of biochemical and anatomical indicators. It is no coincidence that in medicine there are a number of contraindications for the consumption of pork.

Particular attention should be paid to the fact that pigs and humans can have the same diseases, so when consuming pork, a person can become infected from these animals with diseases caused by harmful microorganisms that do not die during heat treatment.

The Quran says: "It is that of those whom Allah has cursed and with whom He became angry and made of them apes and pigs and slaves of ‹aghut. Those are worse in position and further astray from the sound way.” (Surah Al-Maidah (Food), verse 60).

The words spoken in the Quran are sufficient for a Muslim who faithfully follows the law of Allah, believing in the wisdom of the Divine Law, to accept this prohibition and follow the instructions of the Quran without question. But it is also important for one to understand the wisdom of the divine law given in the Quran.
