Ingredients

  • pasta - 1.1 lb (500 g)
  • ground beef - 2.2 lb (1 kg)
  • onion - 5 - 6 medium - sized onions
  • garlic - 2 - 3 cloves
  • carrots - 1 pc.
  • butter - 3.5 oz (100 g)
  • oil - 3 1/3 tbsp (50 ml)
  • black pepper - a pinch
  • paprika - 1 level top tsp.
  • salt - 1 tbsp.
  • oregano - a pinch
  • cumin - a pinch
  • tomatoes - 1 pc. (large)
  • milk - 3 cups (700 ml)
  • flour - 2 - 3 tbsp.
  • eggs - 3 pcs.
  • breadcrumbs - 1 - 2 tbsp.
  • cheese - 7 oz (200 g)

How to make

Boil the pasta in salted water. The pasta should remain slightly hard and it is a mistake to overcook it! I wash them with cold water and strain.

I prepare the filling by frying the finely diced onion, garlic and grated carrot in a mixture of butter and oil. I stew until the vegetable is soft. I add the ground beef.

Season with cumin, black pepper, paprika, salt and oregano. When the minced meat is almost completely fried, I add the peeled and diced tomato. Fry for another 3-4 minutes and remove from the heat.

From butter, oil, fresh milk and flour, I prepare a thick Béchamel sauce. Season with salt and black pepper. When it is ready, I remove it from the heat to cool slightly and add three eggs while constantly stirring.

I grease quarter of a baking pan and sprinkle the bottom with breadcrumbs. I spread half the pasta and the meat filling on it.

I sprinkle with a little cheese and distribute the remaining half of the pasta. On top, spread the béchamel-egg sauce evenly and cover with aluminum foil.

I put the baking pan to bake in a preheated oven at 390°F (200°C) for about 15 minutes.

I take the pastitsio out, remove the foil, sprinkle with the remaining grated cheese and bake again until an appetizing crust is obtained.

Pastitsio with ground beef is ready.
