Apple butter is a product most often used during the winter months. It is a thick, dark brown substance made by the slow cooking of apples in combination with certain spices.
Apple butter is eaten as a light snack, smeared on slices of bread. There is nothing better than bread toast, garnished with flavorful apple butter.
Besides being unbelievably delicious, apple butter is also a rich source of pectin and vitamins. It cleanses and fortifies the body. This extract from the ever so healthy apples treats all kinds of stomach and liver disorders.
The butter's properties are due to the contained therein vitamins C and B, beta-carotene, mineral salts, antioxidants and enzymes, which are not lost during processing. The high amount of pectin, which is characteristic of apples, is also present in apple butter.
You can prepare your own apple butter right at home. Here's what you need:
Ingredients: 5-6 apples, 3-4 cups water, brown sugar, 1 tsp cinnamon.
Preparation: Peel the apples, cut them into pieces and boil in water until fully soft. Blend in a blender or mash by hand.
Add the brown sugar in the following ratio: 1 tbsp brown sugar per 1 cup apple puree; also add in the cinnamon. Put the mixture to boil yet again until fully thickened. If desired, blend once again to get it completely smooth.
To preserve the apple butter, seal it in jars and boil them about 15 min. Leave them for 12 hours with the caps down, then store in a dark and cool place. This way you will have a delicious and healthy jam at hand for the winter, a favorite for young and old alike.
