Middle-aged people who work more than 55 hours a week are at a higher risk of developing dementia, show the results of a study done by Finnish experts.
They kept a close watch on the health of over 2200 state employees from Great Britain. Long work hours had a negative effect on the cognitive skills of middle-age employees, according to the results.
Unfortunately, however, people underestimate the danger and don't believe that such a health problem can happen to them because of the long work hours, explain scientists.
The most common form of dementia occurs as a result of Alzheimer's disease, with the cause of the disease in question still being unclear. According to some experts, the genetic predisposition of people plays a very key role in the development of the disease.
The next most common cause of dementia is multi-infarct dementia, with risk factors of the disease considered to be diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, tobacco smoking, hypertension and others.
One effective natural remedy that can help protect us from dementia is thyme. The aromatic herb is rich in flavonoids, that have an antioxidant effect.
Essentially, this herb provides care for our health and maintains good brain function - it contains volatile oils, which increase the levels of omega-3 fatty acids, as well as the levels of docosahexaenoic acid in the brain.
Omega-3 fatty acids shield the brain from dementia and significantly improve memory and concentration. Docosahexaenoic acid on the other hand maintains the normal functioning of brain cells.
Thyme is also effective for other ailments - when combined with rosemary, thyme can relieve an unpleasant migraine. Simply squeeze drops of the 2 oils onto your fingers and use your fingertips to massage your temples.
Be careful when massaging - you don't need to apply pressure. Rub the oils into your skin well and let it dry thoroughly for a few minutes. You'll notice relief after just a few minutes.
