Tofu is a food made from soy milk and has the consistency of cheese - it is pressed and cut into cubes.
These cubes absorb aromas and flavors very well, so they are suitable for marinating. This is a great meat alternative, because it is high in protein and low in fat.
Tofu is also a good source of iron, calcium and magnesium and is also low in calories, which makes it an excellent choice for losing weight.
Ways to cook tofu
1. Baking is an ideal way to prepare large quantities of delicious bites of tofu, which can be served with a sauce or added to noodles. Squeeze the piece of tofu between 2 pieces of kitchen paper, by placing something heavy on top - this is done to drain the liquid. Cut it into pieces (cubes or triangles) and soak in the marinade for 30 minutes (marinades with soy sauce are very suitable). Arrange them onto baking paper and bake them at 200°C for 35-40 minutes.
Sample recipe:
1 lb (450 g) of tofu
2-3 tbsp. of oil
For the marinade:
4 tbsp. of soy sauce
3 tbsp. of rice vinegar
1 tbsp. of Maple syrup
1 tsp. of sesame oil
2 cloves of garlic (pressed)
1 tbsp. of grated ginger (or dried)
You can also roll the tofu cubes in starch, arrange them in a baking tray and season them with salt and olive oil. Bake them at 390°F (200°C) for 30 minutes.
2. Sautéed tofu - fry the drained cubes over medium heat in a little fat for a total of 15 minutes, until they aquire a golden color. Season them according to your taste (you can do it with sauce) and cook, until they become crispy.
3. Fried tofu - the drained cubes are fried for a total of 10-12 minutes, until they aquire a golden brown color. Season them in the pan and use kitchen paper to absorb their fat before serving them.
4. Stir-fried tofu - crumble the pieces of drained tofu into the fat, season them however you like and cook, until they aquire a caramel-golden color.
