Ingredients

  • pomegranate seeds - 4 cups
  • sugar - 1 cup
  • lemon juice - optional
  • water - 3 cups
measures

How to make

Pour the pomegranate seeds into a large pot and add the sugar and water. If you want your syrup to be a bit stronger in flavor, you can also add the juice of one lemon at this stage.

Heat the mixture over medium-high heat, by stirring occasionally, until the sugar is completely dissolved.

Reduce the heat to medium-low and leave the syrup to simmer for about 30-45 minutes, or until it has thickened and reduced by half. Be sure to stir the syrup regularly during this time, so that it doesn't burn.

Once the syrup has thickened to your liking, remove it from the heat and let it cool for a few minutes.

Strain the homemade pomegranate syrup through a fine sieve to remove the pulp or seeds.

Transfer the syrup into a sterilized glass jar or bottle and store it in the refrigerator.

Your homemade pomegranate syrup is now ready for use! You can use it to sweeten tea or coffee, flavor pancakes or waffles with it, or add it to fresh cocktails.
