Feel like eating something exotic and spicy? Then make chili for dinner. Of course, we're talking about the dish, not the familiar spicy sauce you can find in stores. Chili is made from beef mince, onions, garlic and very, very hot chili peppers. Characteristic of the dish are tomatoes and beans but depending on the chef's imagination, other ingredients can be added as well. It is presumed that the original chili recipe was Mexican but over the years the spicy dish became a part of American cuisine, while in Texas it's even considered a national culinary symbol.
And here's how to make chili step by step.
Ingredients: 1 medium-sized onion head, 2 garlic cloves, 2 tbsp olive oil, 2 lb beef mince, 2 cups tomato paste, 2 cups tomato sauce, 2 tomatoes, 3 tbsp spicy cayenne pepper, 1 tbsp cumin, salt and black pepper to taste, 2 red hot chili peppers, a small can of boiled beans.
Step 1
Chop the garlic, peppers and onion finely. Dice the tomatoes coarsely.
Step 2
Boil the meat. The original recipe calls for braising the meat slightly, then leaving it to simmer in the tomato sauce for 8 hours on low heat. But unfortunately most of us don't have time for that in our hectic lives. Instead of beef you can use chicken, which would allow it to boil faster, but our goal here is to get as close as possible to the traditional Mexican dish.
Step 3
Braise the vegetables in the olive oil.
Step 4
Add the meat.
Step 5
Add the tomato sauce, tomato paste and canned beans.
Step 6
Wait for the products to come to a boil. And the spices and let the dish simmer about 30 min. on low heat, until the tomato sauce starts to evaporate.
Step 7
Your chili is nearly ready. All that's left now is the decoration. Before you serve it you can grate Gouda cheese on top or put round slices of avocado or onions on the side of the bowl.
