Pearl rice pudding

Pearl rice sounds kind of regal. But what is it? This variety of rice is very common. Years ago, it could be said that this was the only rice that could be found in stores. Today it is one of many.

What makes pearl rice different and what do we need to know about it?

This is a medium-grained or short-grained rice, the grains of which are relatively round, without pointed edges. It features a pearly, polished surface of the grains, which can be from white to slightly creamy in color in its raw state.

After boiling, however, it becomes very white and soft, as well as quite sticky, although it retains its shape. Its ability to stick is due to the high content of starch in it. Therefore, it must be prepared very carefully, so it does not turn into a sticky porridge, but to remain firm and pleasant to chew.

Pearl rice is absolutely universal. It can be used to prepare both sweet and savory dishes. Perhaps the most famous dessert made with it is the favorite of many rice pudding.

Savory dishes that can be easily cooked with pearl rice are stuffed peppers, sarma, zucchini with rice, chicken with rice, white rice for garnish, other combined garnishes with vegetables, rice pudding and many others. It goes well with all types of meat and fish dishes.

With pearl rice you can make great sushi. Everyone knows that sushi cannot be made with any rice. Well, pearl rice is the right choice, as it will stick together, but at the same time the grains will remain whole, moist and dense. These features are also used by culinary experts in the field of oriental cuisine.

We're offering you an easy and guaranteed option for preparing pearl rice. Soak in water and in a large bowl the desired amount of rice. Keep in mind that the water should cover the rice and be above it by 5 to 7 inches.

Leave it to soak for at least 12 hours. Soaking softens the grains and ensures that each grain will be perfectly cooked later on.

Then cook the rice in a steamer. Keep in mind that if you use brown pearl rice (yes, there is one), it is less sticky and needs more time, in order for it to be perfect for consumption. Keep in mind that you may need an additional 15-20 minutes for steaming. There is nothing left for us to say, so we hope you enjoy your meal!
