Ever fall upon on a recipe you would like to prepare only half of, or in other words to reduce the amount of products by ½ of the original recipe? For example, you find a recipe, intended for 6 people, but you only want to prepare it for you and your spouse.
There is nothing more practical than this, but often when changing the quantity of the products, the end result is far from desired. For this you need a user-friendly way to reduce the size of a recipe.
This handy guide will make everything easier for you. By following simple mathematics, the chart allows for the adjustment of a large recipe to a smaller one.
When the recipe says: Decrease to:
To make half the recipe
1/4 cup - 2 tbsp
1/3 cup - 2 tbsp + 2 tsp
1/2 cup - 1/4 cup
2/3 cup - 1/3 cup
3/4 cup - 6 tablespoons
1 cup - 1/2 cup
1 tablespoon - 1-1/2 teaspoons
1 tsp - 1/2 teaspoon
1/2 teaspoon - 1/4 teaspoon
1/4 tsp - 1/8 teaspoon
1/8 teaspoon - 1 pinch
To make 1/3 of the recipe
1/4 cup - 1 tablespoon + 1 teaspoon
1/3 cup - 1 tablespoon + 2-1/3 teaspoons
1/2 cup - 2 tbsp + 2 tsp
2/3 cup - 3 tablespoons + 1-1/2 teaspoons
3/4 cup - 1/4 cup
1 cup - 1/3 cup
1 teaspoon - 1 teaspoon
1 tsp - 1/4 teaspoon
1/2 teaspoon - 1/4 teaspoon
1/4 tsp - 1/8 teaspoon
1/8 teaspoon - 1 pinch
In reducing recipes, you may need to use smaller pots or oven dishes. The cooking time of smaller quantities of food may be less.
When you decrease these recipes, remember:
1 cup = 16 tablespoons
1 tablespoon = 3 teaspoons
1 cup = 8 fluid ounces
1 fluid ounce = 2 tablespoons
1 liter = 2 cups
2 pints = 1 liter
1 liter = 2 pints
