Waffles first appeared so long ago that no one knows the name of their inventor. There are hundreds of recipes for making waffles, without anyone even knowing which country they originated from.
Each culture has added something to the basic recipe for waffles. The ancient Greeks, the Germans, English and Dutch have brought their own spin to what goes in waffles.
It is believed that in 15th century Europe, only people of noble birth and kings had the right to eat waffles. The recipes for their preparation were a well-kept secret and distributing them was severely punished.
A few centuries later, hot waffles were being sold to everyone on the street and people could see in front of their eyes how dough was transformed into a flavorful waffle with a tasty topping.
To make the perfect waffles at home, you will need a special waffle iron to get the necessary shape - they need to be in the shape of squares, where the topping is poured in.
To prepare them you will need flour, milk, yeast or baking powder, eggs, water, baking soda, salt, sugar, flavors. The classic waffle dough can be made right at home.
You will need 1 1/2 cups of sifted flour, 2 teaspoons baking powder, 1 tablespoon sugar, 1 teaspoon salt, 1 cup milk, 5 teaspoons of melted butter.
Combine the flour with salt, sugar and baking powder. Beat the egg whites. Separately beat the egg yolks and mix them with the milk and butter, pour them into the flour, mix again and carefully add the egg whites.
In a heated waffle iron, pour the dough in a thin trickle, distributing it evenly along the plate. Close it and bake until ready.
Serve with a topping of jam, cream, sliced bananas, honey or feta cheese and cottage cheese. The composers Johann Strauss and his contemporary Frédéric Chopin, the poets Pablo Neruda and Goethe, as well as Alfred Nobel and Sigmund Freud were dedicated fans of waffles.
