Lentils have been known for centuries, which has become a favorite dish of Balkan cuisine and its easy preparation makes it even more widespread and preferred.
Cooking the lentils involves three stages. The first is its rinsing. This is an important step that should not be overlooked.
There are different ways to wash lentils, but the simplest is to pour cold water over them and rinse them well to remove any contaminants.
Then remove the contaminated water and your lentils are ready for the next stage of cooking. It usually takes about 40 minutes depending on the variety of lentils chosen. For cooking lentils usually the ratio with warm water is 1:2.
After the lentils are cooked, you can proceed to the actual cooking of them, along with spices and vegetables. Usually, the necessary measures and quantities for its preparation at this stage are expressed in the ratio of 1 1/2 cups of water for 1/2 cup of lentils or 3:1.
These amounts of lentil water largely depend on what thickness you want to achieve. If you are aiming for a thick lentil stew effect, you can add 1 or 1 1/4 cups of water to 1/2 cup of lentils and control the thickness of the dish.
