Brown rice is much healthier than white rice and can be a healthy hearty meal. It is easy to cook, but takes a little more water and time than the white one.
It is important to know how much water will be needed to cook the brown rice. Otherwise, the rice will burn or turn into rice porridge.
How do we measure the water needed to fully cook the brown rice?
Boiling brown rice in a pot
Add 2 1/2 cups of water to 1 cup of brown rice. Instead of water, you can use a broth according to your taste. The cooking time for brown rice is usually 40-50 minutes, but check the rice after 30 minutes to make sure it's not burnt.
Boil the rice on a very low heat, it should boil very lightly. When the rice is done and all the water has been absorbed, remove it from the heat and let it sit with the lid on for at least 5 minutes. The rice will firm up and you will serve fluffy and tender rice.
Oven-baked brown rice
To 1 1/2 cups brown rice add 2 1/2 cups boiling water. Add the spices, mix and cover the dish with foil. Bake the rice in the middle of the oven for one hour. After an hour, remove the foil, stir the rice with a fork and serve it.
Brown rice in a rice cooker
To 1 cup of pre-soaked rice (for 1 hour), add 2 and 1/2 or 3 cups of water, depending on the device. Usually, each appliance has instructions for the quantities and ratio of water and rice. Let the rice boil for about 45 minutes. When the rice is ready, the appliance should automatically switch to "warm" mode. Stir the rice with a fork before serving.
Brown rice in the microwave
In a microwave-safe bowl with a lid, add 1 cup rice, 3 cups water and seasonings and fat of choice. Place the bowl in the microwave and bake it uncovered for 10 minutes at high power. The bowl is then covered with a lid - without disturbing the rice - and cooked for another 30 minutes at 50% power. Without opening the microwave oven door, leave the rice in it for 10 minutes. Then remove the bowl from the microwave and stir with a fork.
With brown rice you can prepare any basic rice dish such as:
