Baking soda is a white powder (like salt) sold in sachets in grocery stores, usually next to flour packets.
Baking soda dissolves easily in water (milk, yoghurt) and it is recommended to add 2 grams of baking soda per 100 ml of liquid.
To dissolve baking soda in water, pour the contents of the sachet into a glass and stir with a spoon. It takes about 30 to 40 seconds to activate it and the liquid becomes cloudy and homogeneous.
Since baking soda is basically salt, it dissolves equally well in hot or cold water, although warmer temperatures make it easier to dissolve.
It is important to note that baking soda will not activate with water alone, it needs both water and acid (citric acid solution) to start bubbling.
For example, many people like to dissolve 1/2 tablespoon of baking soda in a glass of water and drink the mixture to regulate the acidity in their stomach.
If you include baking soda in the cooking water, when you cook green vegetables (asparagus, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, green beans, green peppers), they will stay bright, shiny and cook about 3/4 times faster.
And thanks to baking soda, we can prepare delicacies such as:
- soda bread;
- mekitsi with baking soda;
