It is important to follow these instructions when moving a refrigerator to a new location:
Before transporting it:
- Turn off the refrigerator. This should be done several hours before moving to give the evaporator some time to defrost;
- Unplug the power cord from the wall;
- Remove all food in it and clean the inside. If the refrigerator will be transported for more than a day, you may want to place a small bag of activated charcoal or a box of baking soda in the refrigerator to absorb odors;
- Make sure the items such as the rack, shelves, storage containers, ice trays, ice storage bucket, etc are set in place. Doors and movable parts must be protected with tape. This prevents them from opening and causing damage;
- The outside of your fridge should be protected with a blanket.
During transportation of the refrigerator:
- When transporting the refrigerator in a moving van, truck, etc., it is best to keep it upright to minimize possible damage to the sealed system;
If placing the refrigerator in a horizontal position, do the following:
- Models with an upper freezer: Place it on the side opposite the hinges, so that the door remains closed;
- Side-by-Side models: Place it on the side of the freezer. This door is less likely to open;
- French door and bottom freezer models: These must always stand upright, although they can be tilted to fit through doors etc.
- Built-in refrigerator models: All built-in refrigerator models, when transported in a vehicle, must be in an upright position under all circumstances. However, it can be tipped to the side when placed on a trolley to move it into the home.
In advance, you should have measured the doors, which the refrigerator will pass through and after that and the dimensions of the new place where it will be placed to see if it will fit.
