How to make
In a bowl, sift the flour with a pinch of salt and two vanilla powders. Add the sugar, 1 egg, 1 yolk and the cold butter, which is cut into pieces. Knead the soft dough.
Divide the kneaded dough into two equal parts. Add 0.7 oz (20 g) of cocoa to one and knead, until you a brown color is obtained.
Cover the two balls of dough in cling film. Refrigerate them for one hour. On a floured surface, roll out the two colors of dough.
With a sharp knife, cut 0.4″ (1 cm) wide strips. The strips should be an even number. Mine are 12 pcs. Start weaving in the following way.
Lift each even strip of yellow dough almost to the top.
Place a horizontal one and lower the strips. Now pick up each odd-numbered strip and again lay a brown one horizontally.
Lower the raised strips. Continue like this, until you run out of the brown strips. In the step-by-step photos, which I will post, you can clearly see the weaving.
Once you have a woven pattern, cut out cookies with a glass or round cookie cutter.
Carefully transfer the cookies onto baking paper. Bake the Christmas Cookies at 360°F (180°C) in a preheated oven for 10-12 minutes.
Cool the finished Woven Christmas Cookies on a wire rack.
The scraps can be made into balls or woven canes. See the picture for them.
Finally, I want to say, that making these cookies is hard, but you should give it a try, it's fun!
Enjoy!
