Can Mussels Be Canned and How?

Mussels are one of the most delicious seafood and fortunately they are found in abundance on the native Black Sea coast. That's why many people take advantage of their summer sea holiday to eat their favorite mussels and more and more people are wondering if and how mussels can be preserved for a longer period of time.

This is the time to emphasize that as tasty mussels are, they are also as dangerous. Therefore, their preservation should be approached with extreme caution, because improperly processed mussels can be not only not very tasty, but even dangerous to your health.

Seafood lovers have several options for canning mussels. They can heat treat them in advance, then store them in the freezer, as well as marinate and preserve them on their own or in combination with other products.

It is easiest to store mussels in the freezer. The perfectly cleaned mussels are stewed for only a few minutes until their shells open up, after which the edible parts are removed and placed in a bwl of cold water. It is good to leave them there for a short time until the last grains of sand fall out of them. During this time, the boiling broth is boiled again over low heat with the spices you choose (dill, lovage, garlic).

The mussels are placed in jars, which are half filled with vinegar and topped up with mussel broth and then are tightly closed and sterilized for at least 2 hours. Another option is to put the mussels in small bottles of mineral water, then filled up with broth and stored in the freezer. Of course, you can preserve the mussels in tomato juice or something else of your choice and do not forget to sterilize them long enough.
