Quinces are one of the last fruit to be harvested from fruit trees. They are also one of the most durable due to their dense structure and thick skin. But how long quinces will last in storage directly depends on the method and conditions of storage.
Usually, small fruit and those that are damaged, bumped or scratched are left for further processing. Large quinces, which are in a good condition, without stains, scratches and bruises, are chosen for storage.
The quince you have chosen should be wiped with a dry cloth. Then carefully place it in a box with ventilation holes.
Sawdust or dry straw is placed at the bottom of the box.
If possible, wrap all fruit in paper or foil.
If you plan to store quinces for a long time, you should check them occasionally. The fruit should not be allowed to rot. Good conditions will keep the product in good shape longer.
The temperature should be around zero. Humidity should not exceed 80%. It is important to ventilate the room. If the harvest is small, it can be wrapped in paper and then placed in the refrigerator. A basement or a cellar is more suitable for storing a large amount of harvest.
The main thing is not to store pears near quinces.
This way, properly stored, quinces can last even until spring. But the regulated periods in which it has been proven that the fruit will be edible are 3 months in a refrigerator or a cool room. When stored in the freezer, the shelf life increases to 9 months.
Despite the fact that quinces can be stored for a long time, they are still very susceptible to damage and rotting, especially if the fruit is plucked from the tree well ripened. Therefore, for longer storage, choose greener fruit, so that you can prepare your favorite quince pastries or quince muffins for a longer time.
