How to Store Apples?

People who grow fruit, will tell you that it is easier to grow a good crop than to be able to preserve it during the cold months, so that it does not spoil, especially in an urban environment. But the fact that storing apples is not an easy task, does not mean, that the mission is impossible.

One of the most important things is to choose the right variety, because not all apple varieties are suitable for storage for a longer period of time. Delicate summer apple varieties quickly lose their qualities, so it is best to focus on later autumn and winter varieties, which are more suitable for long-term storage.

It is advisable to choose fruit, which are not quite ripe. You should also have a room with a relatively constant temperature of about +4 degrees, as much as a refrigerator and a high level of humidity. Ideal for this purpose would be a basement or other similar rooms, in which the temperature will not fall below zero.

Apples for storage should be in good condition, without rotten areas and spots, not too ripe or too green.

It is preferable to wrap each individual fruit, so that they do not come into direct contact with each other. You can wrap them in household paper, newspapers or paper napkins.

In case this seems like too much work, you can sprinkle the bottom of a crate or plastic container with sawdust and arrange layer by layer of apples, by covering each layer with sawdust. This way you ensure both distance between the fruit and at the same time sufficient ventilation.

If the humidity in the apple storage room is too low, you can replace the sawdust with sand, which you have previously mixed with a little ash.

Follow these tips for storing apples, so that you can then make yourself a delicious fruit salad, your favorite strudel or apple pie.
