Signs and Causes of Iron-Deficiency

Iron is a very important element for our body. Its absence or any other element can lead to serious problems.

Symptoms of iron deficiency:

- tiredness, weakness, pale skin, chest pain, shortness of breath, headache, dizziness or lightheadedness, cold hands and feet, inflammation or pain in the tongue, unusual hunger, poor appetite, especially in babies and children;

When to consult a specialist:

If you, a loved one or your child has the above symptoms, you should seek medical attention immediately. It is not recommended to diagnose yourself or treat yourself, so be sure to consult your doctor before doing anything.

Causes of iron deficiency in the body:

Iron deficiency occurs when your body lacks the required amount of iron, which prevents enough hemoglobin from being produced. The reasons for the lack of iron in the body are the following:

- Blood loss. As we know, blood contains iron and in particular red blood cells. This means that if you have blood loss, you will also lose iron. For women who have a very heavy cycle, there is a high risk of having iron deficiency, because they have high blood loss.

- Slow and chronic blood loss in the body. If you have a peptic ulcer or hiatal hernia, colon polyp, or colorectal cancer, this can cause iron deficiency.

- Iron deficiency can also be due to your diet. As we know, the easiest way to get any nutrient is through the food we eat. If you do not drink enough milk, this can lead to negative consequences. Meat, eggs, some leafy vegetables are rich in iron, and we can also get iron through food supplements.

- Inability to absorb iron. When we eat, what we take in is absorbed into the blood and our small intestines. If any part of your gut has been damaged or removed by surgery, it can lead to an inability of the gut to process food properly.

- Pregnancy. When the diet of pregnant women lacks iron, it can lead to iron deficiency in expectant mothers.

To stock up on some iron, we suggest you try some of these recipes:

- oven-baked steaks;

- delicious liver;

- stewed spinach;

- or omelette;
