How to make
Mix the oil, milk, sugar, orange juice and baking soda in a bowl and mix.
Pour the melted butter and start adding the flour in portions, until it is completely absorbed.
A medium soft dough should be obtained, which will firm up further in the fridge. Leave it to cool for about 1 hour.
Boil the syrup from the listed ingredients. On high heat - 10-15 minutes or moderate - 25 minutes. Wait for it to cool down.
Tear pieces from the stiff pastry dough and give them an oval, slightly oblong shape. Make them plumper, not flat. With a thin, sharp knife, make a grid on their surface.
Arrange them in a tray lined with baking paper and spaced apart a little. You will get two trays from the standard of each oven.
Bake the favorite homemade sweets at 360°F (180°C), until they aquire a golden color (17-18 minutes). Keep an eye on them, because every oven bakes differently. They should not darken too much.
While they are hot, arrange the sweets in another container, which is deeper and cover them with syrup.
Leave them to soak and then serve the syrupy sweets sprinkled with crushed, roasted walnuts or pistachios.
