"I wonder who`s going to get the fortune this year."

Ingredients

  • milk - 2 cups, cool
  • sugar - 1 tablespoon
  • eggs - 4 + 1, beaten, to spread
  • oil - 2 - 3 tablespoons
  • flour - 2 lb (1 kg)
  • yeast - 2 tsp (10 g) dry, or 1 packet
  • butter - 3 1/3 tbsp (50 g) melted
  • sesame seeds - 1/2 cup lightly roasted + some for sprinkling

How to make

In a bowl, mix the cool milk, sugar, eggs and oil and beat them with a mixer. In another bowl, sift 2 cups of flour and add the yeast to it. Pour this floury mixture in to the milk-egg mix and beat until homogenous. Leave it to rest for 10 minutes.

Separately, mix 2 cups of flour with the salt. After 10 minutes, pour the salty flour in to the other mixture and beat to obtain a smooth and elastic dough, which separates from the walls of the bowl.

If necessary, add additional flour. Transfer the ready dough into a slightly oiled bowl, cover and leave it in a warm place to rise well and double in size (about 30 minutes).

Divide the doubled in volume dough into 3 balls. Roll out each ball on a floured surface into a sheet, brush it with butter and sprinkle it with sesame seeds. Similarly, roll out the second and third sheets and place them on top of one another on the first. Cut these sheets into 8 pieces, as you would a cake.

In each piece, place a lucky charm, wrap them into scones and arrange them in a lightly greased baking tray. Leave the new year's loaf with fortunes to rise again for 30 minutes. Smear it with the beaten egg, sprinkle with sesame seeds if desired and put it to bake in a preheated 340°F (170 °C) oven.

After the first 20 minutes, put foil over the top to prevent burning. Allow the baked loaf to cool for 15 minutes in the tray and then remove it.
