Toasting the nuts, which are added to dough, cakes or salad, emphasizes their flavor. Hazelnuts, peanuts or walnuts become real valuable ingredients in any dish. Let's look at all the pros and cons of several nut toasting methods.
Toasting nuts on a preheated pan
The method claims to be the fastest. For it, heat a non greased frying pan over moderate heat and when it heats up, add the nuts. Then stir them and shake the pan several times, until they are toasted. The time depends on the size of the nuts.
Result: Quick and easy - 1-5 minutes. The nuts are toasted, but not evenly. They usually have a few charred spots on them. This especially depends on their uneven surface. The nuts do not have time to toast completely - inside and out. Quick, but not very high-quality toasting. Nuts don't get as rich in flavor as they should. These toasted nuts are perfect for making vegetable salads.
Toasting nuts in a pan without preheating
Place the nuts in a non greased and non heated pan. Turn the hob on to medium temperature and start toasting. Stir the nuts, by shaking the pan at all times, until it has heated and then, until the nuts are golden brown.
Result: Takes 3-7 minutes. The nuts brown more evenly than in a preheated pan, but you still have a few burnt, charred spots. However, unlike the previous method, the nuts are toasted inside and out more evenly. This nut toasting method is more controlled. However, even with careful preparation, the result is not perfect.
Toasting nuts in a microwave
The nuts are mixed with a small amount of vegetable oil to brown better. Then they are spread out in an even layer on a tray, which is suitable for a microwave (you can also use baking paper). Cook at 700 W in 1-minute increments.
Result: Takes 3-5 minutes. It is more difficult to determine the degree of readiness of the nuts. A sign of readiness is not the appearance, but the aroma - it noticeably increases. Also, nuts are very hot after cooking and need more time to cool. And the size of the microwave limits the number of nuts you can toast at once. To many, this method may seem a bit counter-intuitive, but strangely enough, it works! It's better to rely on your own nose, but if you need to toast a small amount of nuts, the microwave will help.
Toasting nuts in the oven
The method takes the most time of all possible. For this, arrange the nuts in an even layer on a tray covered with baking paper and place it in an oven preheated to 180°C. After 5 minutes, remove the tray and stir the nuts. Then check their readiness every 2-3 minutes.
Results: The only con is the time - 5-8 minutes, this method is the longest of all. The result is perfectly toasted nuts. They are evenly browned and toasted inside and out with rich flavor. It is true that this method does not require constant attention. But you can also do other things during this time. The end result speaks in favor of this toasting method.
You can make Perfect Toasted Peanuts, Roasted Almonds or Toasted Seeds using this method.
