Wine is the most popular alcoholic beverage, which has been revered since ancient times as the sacred elixir of the gods.
Today, wine retains its popularity, with hundreds of varieties now found around the world.
Wine is divided into three of its popular forms – white wine, rosé and red wine. It is accepted that red wine is mainly consumed during the cold periods of the year, because of its rich taste and distinct aroma.
The most famous familiar types of red wine are Merlot and Cabernet. Both types of wine go well with meat and each of them has its own specific taste.
Merlot and Cabernet both originate from Bordeaux, France. Because of their characteristics, they quickly became popular and became the dominant types of red wine.
What is the difference between Merlot and Cabernet
Merlot is considered to be the more versatile and soft-tasting wine of the two types. Its taste is described as a mix of cherry and chocolate. Merlot is pleasant and easy to drink. In combinations where the grape dominates, the soft fruit flavors are revealed even more.
On the other hand, Cabernet appears as the more aggressive and older relative of Merlot. This grape is much more tannic, which gives it a dry taste. The Cabernet grape is a variety that needs to ripen for a significantly longer time, which is why the wines with it also need more aging time before being opened. The taste of Cabernet is much more saturated, strong and aggressive, unlike Merlot.
Both varieties are ideal for serving with Roast Pork, Beef Steak or Italian Pasta.
