When you expect a harvest of delicious strawberries, but in the end they don't produce fruit, don't give up. Find the reason why the strawberries didn't produce this year, so you can correct it and have a good harvest next year.
The reasons why strawberries do not produce fruit
Old strawberry plants
Garden strawberries planted more than five years ago should not be relied on for producing fruit (there are exceptions, but they are rare). Plantations must be updated on time.
New strawberries (last year's) have no or almost no flowers
If the planting was done in August - nothing surprising. In order to taste the first fruits in the next season, garden strawberries should be planted in late July - early August, no later.
The problem is in the variety of strawberries
If you haven't seen normal garden strawberry fruit since you bought them, more than a year in a row, the problem is in the strawberry variety. Seedlings bought on the market can usually turn out to be one of the weedy varieties.
Unsuitable soil for strawberries
When the plants were growing flower buds, your strawberries did not have enough moisture and nutrients. Or excessive nitrogen content in the soil can lead to the formation of a dense green mass and lack of fruit.
Lack of pollination
If the strawberries bloom, but the fruit do not grow, this is a lack of pollination. This usually happens with heavy, prolonged rains during flowering. Another more unpleasant reason could be that bees and bumblebees are disappearing in your area. Then there will be few, not only of strawberries, but also of plums, cherries and cucumbers. Or you used insecticides during flowering.
Strawberry pests
We are talking about strawberry pests (strawberry weevil) or diseases.
Freezing of the strawberry flowers
It can happen with a sharp cold temperature. There's a characteristic darkening of only the middle of the flower, while the petals remain healthy.
Think about what could be the reason in your case and find the solution to guarantee delicious red fruit at least next year. With them, you will regularly make your family:
