Spirulina is a type of blue-green algae, that is packed with nutrients and is often considered a superfood. It has been used as a food source for several centuries in Mexico and some African countries and has been sold in the US as a supplement since the 1970s.
Unless you're taking it as a supplement (or mixing it straight into a glass of water), you need recipes to include spirulina in your daily menu. Many people add anywhere from a few teaspoons to a few tablespoons of spirulina to their smoothies and green juices.
Here are two recipes, that don't contain the same levels of spirulina, which you would take in supplement form, but will help you start incorporating spirulina into your daily menu. Once you're familiar with the taste of spirulina, be an experimenter and try adding it to patties, hummus, or even brownies!
Guacamole with Spirulina
Boost the nutrition and deep green color of creamy avocado by adding spirulina to your favorite guacamole recipe. Cumin, aromatic oregano, olive oil, dried tomatoes, lemon and spicy crushed paprika flakes balance the strong flavor of spirulina.
Spirulina as a spice
Use spirulina to add a grassy, nutty flavor to kale chips, popcorn, steamed vegetables, baked potatoes, and more.
