Aerophagia is a type of condition in which a person, when eating, laughing or talking, takes in more air than they can exhale. As a result, this air goes to their small intestine and then leaves the body in the form of gas.
More air can also be taken in when a person smokes, chews gum, or drinks water or anything else. In addition to this air going to the small intestine, it also causes stomach bloating, it also prevents nutrients from being properly absorbed by the body.
This condition is due to the fact, that you eat very fast. This is why the saying is true, that when one eats one should not speak and do it slowly.
If you have dentures and they don't fit, this can also lead to excess air being swallowed.
Aerophagia can also be caused by damage to the spinal cord or nerves that run through the brain. It can also occur when the lungs are not well ventilated.
When you drink water or any other drink, you should do it slowly, as you would with a meal, so that you can swallow as little air as possible. This will prevent aerophagia unless you have some of the other listed causes.
