How to make

For the layer, beat the eggs with the sugar to fluffy cream or until they nearly double in volume.

Add the oil, vanilla and stir. Mix the sifted flour with the baking powder and add them to the mixture in lots, while stirring nonstop.

Lay out a square tray with baking paper, smear it with a little oil and distribute the mixture evenly on it.

Put the tray in a preheated 360°F (180 °C) oven and bake until the cake layer turns a golden color. Cool it and cut it into 4 identical strips.

While the cake layer is cooling, prepare the cream mixture. Add the eggs, sugar and flour to a pot, stir. Pour the cold milk into them in a thin trickle, while stirring nonstop. Put the pot on a moderate stove and boil, while stirring nonstop, until the cream thickens. Take the pot off the stove, add the vanilla and butter, stir until the butter melts completely and is absorbed into a homogeneous mixture.

Smear the strips with the hot cream. Wrap the first strip into a roll and place it in a suitable plate, smear the others and wrap them around it.

With the remaining cream, smear the cake on the top and sides, sprinkle with coarsely ground walnuts and leave it in the fridge for a few hours.

A superb homemade cake with homemade cream!
