Ingredients

  • oil - 2 tbsp
  • butter - 2 tbsp
  • carrots - 1
  • garlic - 3 cloves
  • onions - 1 head
  • cumin - 2 tsp, seeds
  • mustard seeds - 2 tsp
  • ginger - 1" grated root
  • turmeric - 2 tsp
  • chili - 1 tsp
  • garam masala - 1 tsp
  • red lentils - 1 cup (225 g)
  • coconut milk - 1 2/3 cups (400 ml)
  • water - 1 2/3 cups (400 ml)
  • tomatoes - 5 peeled and chopped
  • limes - juice of 2
  • coriander - 4 tbsp
  • almonds - 1 2/3 tbsp (25 g), sliced
  • black pepper

How to make

Heat the oil and butter in a pot and saute the onions for 5 min. Add the garlic, cumin, mustard seeds and ginger.

Saute for another 5 min., stirring periodically. Add the turmeric, chili and gram masala. Saute 1 more min.

Add the lentils, water, coconut milk and tomatoes. Season with salt and black pepper. Bring to a boil, lower the heat and simmer for 45 min.

Season with the juice from the limes, stir and cook another 15 min. Sprinkle with the almonds and serve.
