How to make
Heat the oil and butter in a pot and saute the onions for 5 min. Add the garlic, cumin, mustard seeds and ginger.
Saute for another 5 min., stirring periodically. Add the turmeric, chili and gram masala. Saute 1 more min.
Add the lentils, water, coconut milk and tomatoes. Season with salt and black pepper. Bring to a boil, lower the heat and simmer for 45 min.
Season with the juice from the limes, stir and cook another 15 min. Sprinkle with the almonds and serve.
