Ingredients

  • pasta - 10.5 oz (300 g)
  • grated cheddar - 5.3 oz (150 g) divided into two parts
  • ham - 5 large slices
  • milk - 3.5 cups (700 ml)
  • butter - 2.1 oz (60 g)
  • flour - 2.1 oz (60 g)
  • salt - 1/2 tsp.
  • nutmeg - 1/4 tsp. (freshly grinded)
  • black pepper - 1/2 tsp.
  • breadcrumbs - 1/2 cup

How to make

Oven - 360°F (180°C);

1 cup = 6.8 fl oz (200 ml).

Ceramic baking dish - 8x9″ (20x22 cm).

The pasta is cooked according to the manufacturer's instructions. Strain it and set it aside.

Grate the cheese.

The slices of ham are cut into approximately equal larger pieces.

Melt the butter in a deep pan at a moderate temperature. Once it starts to boil, add the flour at once and stir vigorously for about 1 minute with a wire whisk.

Add the cold milk, nutmeg, salt and black pepper. Stir, until a completely smooth sauce is obtained. Half of the grated cheese is added and stirred.

Leave the mixture on the hob for a while, until it starts to leave light streaks from the stirrer. Immediately remove it from the heat and add the ham. Mix it.

The cooked pasta al dente is added to the mixture. Stir and pour it into the baking dish. Sprinkle with the remaining cheese and the breadcrumbs.

The gratin is baked at 360°F (180°C) for about 25-30 minutes.
