Babaco is a fruit from the papaya family. It is most commonly found in the mountain regions of Ecuador, as well as in small quantities in New Zealand and Australia. In other countries it's grown in greenhouses.
Babaco is a natural hybrid of mountain papaya. The fruits are yellow, no more than 20″ (50 cm) long, about 6″ (15 cm) thick and can weigh up to 4.5 lb (2 kg), although though they usually weigh about 28 oz (800 g). Aside from its shape and the way it looks, the interesting thing about this fruit is that it contains no seeds.
Taste-wise, Babaco resembles pineapple, kiwi, with a slight citrus tinge, making its taste unique. It's a delicate fruit, which is why it needs to be transported carefully and not across large distances, as this would contribute to its spoiling and damage.
Babaco contains the enzyme papain, which helps in the breaking down and absorption of proteins and the stimulating of digestion. It's recommended for use in cases of intestinal problems, such as colitis and entercolitis.
Additionally, this fruit contains ascorbic acid, which boosts and strengthens the immune system and helps the body fight off the negative effects of viruses and infections.
The fruits are rich in vitamin A, which is good for the eyes, while the potassium protects the cardiovascular system. With regular consumption you can significantly reduce your risk of heart attack and stroke.
Delicious Babaco fruits can be eaten fresh on their own or in recipes with other ingredients. The fruits tolerate different kinds of heat treatment, are used in making jams, syrups, jellies and others.
Juicy Babaco can be added to yoghurt, ice cream and is excellent in fruit cakes.
