Chestnuts are among the most favored healer remedies. The beneficial properties, which the plant provides to a number of conditions, have been confirmed not just by folk healers but by scientists as well.
Thanks to its coumarin glycosides, triterpenoid saponin, essential oils, fatty oils and other substances contained in the parts of the chestnut, it has managed to secure its place in folk medicine.
The seeds, fruits, leaves and bark of young chestnut trees are used for remedies. The bark needs to be collected during the first spring months, when the juices flow in the saplings. The seeds are collected during fall.
Chestnut trees are known for their painkilling, venotonic, anti-inflammatory and capillary-strengthening action. That's why they are used for numerous unpleasant conditions.
For example, for bronchitis, cough and gout, you can take concoction made from chestnut seeds. Soak 1 tsp of ground chestnut seeds in 2 cups (500 ml) boiling water.
Let the mixture sit as is for 2 hours, then filter it. Drink 2/5 cup (100 ml) of it 3 times a day after meals.
An infusion of the leaves and bark of the plant can also be made for the same purpose. Mix 1 tbsp of chopped leaves with 1 tsp bark. Boil the mixture for 10 min. in 1 1/5 cups (300 ml) water. Let it cool and filter it. Drink 1 wine glass of it 3 times a day.
For sciatica and rheumatism, use a mixture of chestnuts and brandy. Pour the alcoholic drink over the crushed fruits in a 10:2 ratio. The substance needs to sit in a glass container for several days. Then smear it over the affected area.
Fresh leaves are used to make compresses to heal ulcers and varicose veins. Mash the leaves and apply to the problem areas.
For exostosis, you can make a homemade ointment from chestnuts. Grate and crush 6 chestnuts to get a mush. Pour a little camphor spirit over it. Smear this over the affected area and sleep overnight. Repeat this procedure until you feel relief.
For prostate adenoma, prepare a mixture of 1 oz (25 g) of ripe chestnut peels, ground and poured over with 2 cups pure alcohol. Leave the resulting liquid in a dark area for 2 weeks. Then filter it and take 10 drops per day. Continue taking it for 20 days, then take a break and repeat the procedure.
It is said that grandma's home remedies containing chestnuts help against hemorrhoids. You can make a compress using a smothered cabbage leaf that's been chopped, 6 tbsp grated chestnut, 2 tbsp olive oil and 6 tbsp chopped onions. Place the ingredients between gauzes and apply the compress onto the affected area.
