Sushi is a very delicious Japanese dish that consists of cooked rice rolled up with raw fish or other seafood. Sushi can be made not only with fish, but also with fruits and vegetables, as well as meat. It is the most famous dish outside of Japan, and its taste makes it a favorite food for millions of people around the world.
The history of sushi begins in ancient times, and in its original version it referred to fish marinated in vinegar. Sushi arose due to the need for proper storage of seafood - the Japanese began to store caught fish in large wooden containers, with each row of fish sprinkled with salt and sometimes rice.
It was not until the 19th century that a Japanese chef began to offer raw fish seasoned with rice vinegar. This way, the dish gradually approached its current version. Nowadays, there are hundreds of variations for making sushi and the filling and seasonings can vary greatly. Traditionalists still rely on sushi with fish, but there are now also sushi with meat, only with vegetables, sweet sushi, vegan sushi and many other types.
The most important thing in making sushi is the rice, which is made in a special way to make it sticky and with a soft structure. Sushi is always served with soy sauce, wasabi and pickled ginger. Without them, the delicious rolls would not have the same taste.
