If you have wine at home and have an urgent reason to drink, but for some reason there is no corkscrew, this is not a serious problem. In such a situation, you just need to choose one of the options below.
Proven ways to open wine without a corkscrew
Press the cork down
You can try to open the wine without a corkscrew with any blunt object whose area is smaller in diameter than the neck of the bottle: marker, handle of a spoon or fork, lipstick, key, etc. Simply push the cork down to push it into the bottle. As a last resort, you can try opening the wine without a corkscrew with your finger.
With a knife or a key
Use a knife with a narrow, preferably serrated blade, or a longer key. It should be carefully inserted into the cork at an angle of 45 degrees and by turning it carefully, unscrew the cork outward. At the same time, if you use a knife, it is better to tie the hand that holds the neck of the bottle with a towel to avoid cutting yourself.
Rope and awl
A thick knot is made at the end of the rope. With the help of an awl, it is pushed to the bottom of the cork, then pulled with force.
Screwdriver, self-tapping screw and pliers
Screw the self-tapping screw into the cork and pull it out with pliers. With some skill, you can screw a self-tapping screw into a soft cork with a knife or something similar to a screwdriver, such as a door key. You can also pull a self-tapping screw with the cork with your hands without improvised means. But be careful, because this way you risk breaking the bottle and cutting yourself!
Ways That Don't Always Work
Syringe
Carefully pierce the cork with the needle and pump some air out of the bottle. As a result of the increase in pressure in the bottle, the cork will definitely pop out. But the main thing here is not to overdo it, otherwise the bottle may burst.
Clips or wire
In this case, a small hook is made at the end of the wire or stretched paper clip, after which this improvised tool is inserted into the bottle between the cork and the neck. Then twist and rest the hook on the bottom of the cork and pull up to the end. For more security, you can use 2 paper clips or wire on both sides of the cork.
Lighter
You can gently heat the neck of the bottle with a lighter (or better, two). As a result, the heated cork will have to start coming out on its own. Accordingly, it can be safely removed when it leaves the neck of the bottle halfway.
