Store your herbs and spices in a cool and dry place. The ideal temperature is one that remains relatively constant, averaging about 21°C.
Storage of spices should be away from any direct heat sources. A good place to store them is in the dark and away from heat and that will keep your spices dry.
Be careful when adding spices to your dishes.
It is tempting to pour spices in over the pot and this is certainly done from time to time, but unfortunately it can affect the quality of the spices over time.
When you keep your spices open over the stove, you expose them to the heat and steam rising from your dish and this can cause condensation inside the spice containers.
It is better to pour the spices in the palm of your hand or on a spoon and away from the stove. Only then add them to your dish.
What can you store your spices?
Some people prefer amber jars with airtight lids. Others prefer to use small glass jars with hermetically sealed lids, that can be easily stored in a drawer or cabinet.
Some people just keep the dried spices in sealable bags. If you are not sure how long you have had the herbs and spices in your cupboard for, do a quick aroma test.
If you can't smell them, it's time to throw them away. Buy only the amount that you think you can use up quickly, as 6 months is a pretty good time frame for storing herbs and spices.
This way you will always have fenugreek on hand for delicious bean soup or fragrant savory herb for your favorite fried meatballs.
