When to Defrost a Refrigerator?

Most modern refrigerators do not require defrosting, but even with them it is best to do it occasionally, especially if there is ice in the freezer. Despite the advantage of new refrigerators, many of us still have ones that allow frost to build up.

Usually the instructions say how often to defrost a refrigerator, but if you see that the ice has reached a thickness of 3-4 centimeters, you can do this earlier than the specified time frame.

When you take the food out of the fridge, remember that it's good to keep chilled foods cold and frozen foods should not defrost. Do not use an ice pick, knife or other sharp object to remove frost, as this may damage the interior lining of the refrigerator.

So, here's what the whole process looks like in a few easy steps.

1. Empty your fridge. Use this as a great opportunity to get rid of any junk or expired food you've collected over time! To prevent the rest of the food from spoiling when you take it out of the refrigerator, store it in coolers or on ice.

2. Remove the shelves and drawers from the refrigerator. Although not required, it would be great to clean out the fridge. Be careful as the cold plastic may be brittle and break easily.

3. Unplug the refrigerator from the outlet and open the doors to allow the ice to melt. Moving the refrigerator away from the wall will make it easier to clean up the draining water, as well as give you the opportunity to sweep behind and underneath. Place basins or towels to catch water that will drain when the ice melts.

4. Leave the refrigerator open and unplugged for eight hours. If you're not in a rush, this is your best option to defrost the fridge completely, although you might struggle to find a cool place to store food for that period of time. In case you prefer to speed up the process, you have several options. Place a pot of hot water in the refrigerator. Use a hair dryer to melt small pieces of frost or place a fan near the open refrigerator.
