In our modern society, where we constantly strive to find a scientific explanation for all of the processes around us, many of us do still have certain superstitions we believe in. Check out these culinary superstitions and see how many of them, if any, you believe in:
1. Garlic - we all know that garlic is used to chase away evil spirits but did you know that it also dispels curses and spells?
2. Eggs - they are the symbol of fertility. As such, it is common practice for farmers to break an egg in the middle of their field with the belief that this will bring in a rich yearly harvest. Another belief about eggs is that those with 2 yolks portend of a relative or someone you know getting married or having twins.
3. Salt - spilled salt is considered bad luck but if you want to get rid of such you have to throw salt with your right hand over your left shoulder. This way you'll blind the devil and save your soul.
4. If you cut your bread loaf and there's a large hole inside, this portends of the death of someone close to you in the near future. Some like to make a cross on their bread slice in order to keep the devil away from their dinner.
5. Noodles - in China, the longer one's rice noodles, the longer the life they are going to live. For this reason, noodles must never be cut because this is kind of like shortening one's life.
6. Tea - the superstition goes that you should never put milk in your tea before you've added the sugar, otherwise you're not going to get married.
At the same time, undissolved sugar at the bottom of your cup of tea bespeaks of a secret admirer who likes you. If you spill tea, expect to be visited by a stranger. If you start pouring tea, for your guests let's say, don't ever pass the teapot to anyone else because this will bring you bad luck.
7. If you see bubbles on the surface of your coffee, hurry to grab them with your spoon and eat them - they will help you earn great wealth.
8. Rice - throwing rice at weddings is said to bring health, happiness, longevity and prosperity to the newlyweds.
9. Parsley - in the past it was believed that if a woman was having trouble getting pregnant, she must sow parsley seeds, after which her condition would improve. If the parsley in a woman's garden grows frail, this means that her husband is also weak and inadequate.
10. Chili pepper - if you place it directly into the hand of your friend, your friendship will soon fall apart.
