Everyone has almost certainly had their stomach growl at the most inappropriate moment. According to Murphy's Laws, this usually happens in a quiet room, that is full of other people. In such situations, usually the least we feel is some awkwardness.
Growling stomach is caused by the periodic contraction of the stomach muscles. When there is no food in the stomach, the contraction of this muscle group causes gastric juices, gas and air to make a gurgling sound. The presence of food presses the remaining contents of the stomach against its walls and muffles the sound.
In most cases a stomach growls from hunger. In these situations, the problem is easily solved. No matter how short of time you are, eat something on the go and the growling will stop. It is not advisable in these situations, however, that your food should be chocolate, chips or cakes. Taken on an empty stomach, these foods will harm your stomach. Muesli, yogurt or bananas are best in this case.
When growling stomach occurs after eating, it means that you swallowed more air during the meal. To avoid such discomfort, try not to talk too much while eating. Also, chew your food thoroughly.
Another cause of growling stomach can be the consumption of gas-forming products. The frequent appearance of this sound from your stomach means, that you should temporarily limit pears, cabbage, legumes, sugary carbonated drinks and especially ice cream. To deal with the problem, when it appears, drink a few tablets with activated carbon.
In rare cases, the appearance of growling stomach can be a symptom of a disease of the gastrointestinal tract. Most often it is dysbacteriosis. If you suspect such a problem, consult a doctor instead of self-medicating. There is a possibility, that the growling is due to an intestinal infection and medication can make the situation worse.
Growling stomach can be due to psychological reasons. If a person, for example, was once very embarrassed due to an unexpected stomach growling in front of other people, in the future they may fear, that the embarrassment will repeat itself.
Such a condition can even lead to neurosis. In these situations, try to calm down, drink water. If this does not help and the problem worsens, consult a psychologist.
