How to make
Begin by preparing the onions. Peel the onions and slice them into thin strips, half-moons, or medium-sized pieces depending on your preference. Separate the onion strands with your hands and place them in a large bowl.
In another bowl combine the flour, cornstarch, salt, and black pepper. Mix the dry ingredients well so the spices are evenly distributed.
Add the sliced onions to the dry mixture and toss them gently until all the onion pieces are evenly coated. The flour and cornstarch mixture will help create a light and crispy coating during frying.
Pour enough oil into a deep pan or pot and heat it over high heat until it reaches frying temperature.
Carefully add the coated onions to the hot oil in small batches. Fry them for about 2-3 minutes until they turn golden brown and crispy. Avoid overcrowding the pan, as frying too many onions at once lowers the oil temperature and prevents them from becoming crispy.
Once the onions are golden and crunchy, remove them with a slotted spoon and place them on paper towels to drain the excess oil.
Allow the fried onions to cool completely. As they cool, they will become even crispier.
Crispy fried onions are perfect as a topping for salads, hot dogs, burgers, wraps, soups, and many other dishes.
Store them in a tightly sealed jar or container for up to 3-4 days to keep them crunchy.
