How to make
To prepare this aromatic onion bread, begin by preparing the onions. Peel the onions and cut them into small cubes. Heat a little vegetable oil in a frying pan and sauté the onions over medium heat until they soften and become lightly golden. This caramelization process gives the bread a deep and pleasant flavor. Once cooked, set the onions aside to cool completely.
In a deep bowl pour the warm water and add the sugar and dry yeast. Stir the mixture well and leave it for about 5 to 10 minutes until the yeast activates and becomes slightly foamy.
Add the vegetable oil and salt to the yeast mixture. Gradually begin adding the flour while mixing with a spoon at first.
Once the mixture thickens, start kneading the dough by hand. When the dough begins to form a soft structure, add the cooled sautéed onions and continue kneading.
Knead the dough for about 8 to 10 minutes until it becomes soft, smooth, and elastic.
Shape the dough into a ball and place it into a lightly oiled bowl. Cover it with a clean kitchen towel and leave it in a warm place for about 1 hour until the dough doubles in size.
After the dough rises, transfer it onto a lightly floured surface and shape it into an elongated loaf.
Place the loaf onto a baking tray lined with parchment paper. If desired, make a few shallow cuts on top with a knife to create a beautiful crust.
Allow the bread to rise again for about 20 minutes.
Bake the onion bread in a preheated oven at 190°C (375°F) for about 35 to 40 minutes until the crust becomes golden and crisp.
After baking remove the bread and allow it to cool on a wire rack so the crust remains crisp and the texture stays soft inside.
This homemade onion bread is wonderfully aromatic and pairs beautifully with soups, stews, or fresh salads.
